Preserving History: Renovating Downtown Garland

March 6, 2023

Downtown Garland has been a well-loved local spot for North Texans since the early 1900s. Today, Garland’s city square features homegrown local shops and businesses, public art installations, and over 12 locally-owned eateries.

Downtown Garland and its architecture also hold a significant place in Texas History, according to this excerpt from www.garlandtx.gov:

“Garland’s historic downtown commercial district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2017 in recognition of its importance in the history of Garland and the State of Texas. The National Register listing also recognizes the architectural significance of the buildings within the district, as they represent many architectural styles and forms present in Garland’s early development.”

Hill & Wilkinson has been a part of many recent and significant projects requiring various forms of historic restoration. As a result, we have a clear understanding of the efforts involved, as well as the significance of restoring historical buildings. In light of Downtown Garland’s historical significance, we are honored to be the general contractor working on the City of Garland Downtown Square and Streetscapes renovations, alongside our friends, and the architect on this project, Studio Outside.

This project is a 15-block redevelopment of Downtown Garland square and surrounding areas. The scope includes new streetscape and infrastructure. We attended the groundbreaking ceremony back in November 2021, and construction is anticipated to be completed in Fall 2023.

This project continues a 13-year-long relationship with the City of Garland. As part of this ongoing relationship, we are thrilled to partner with the wonderful people who work for the city.

In addition to this new Downtown Garland renovation project, we had the privilege of constructing other buildings in Garland, including the Charles E. Duckworth Utility Services Building, Analytical Chemistry Lab, Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, 5th Street Crossing, a renovation and addition for City Hall, Heritage Park, Holford Recreation and Aquatics Center, Performing Arts Center, Police Shooting Range, Garland Transportation, and more.

We are grateful to be a part of the beautification and preservation of such a historical place and happy to continue working with the longtime client we have in the City of Garland.
