H&W Carpenter’s Work at SEU Shapes Daughter’s Next Chapter

At Hill & Wilkinson we treasure our ongoing client relationships, and when we think of long-term relationships, St. Edwards University is one of the first to come to mind. Over the past eight years, we’ve completed nearly 50 projects on campus, giving us the privilege of building not only facilities, but meaningful relationships within SEU. “St. Edwards University has been a great client to work for,” said H&W Austin VP of Operations, Stephen Homiak. “Our staff enjoys working with them, and they are truly a great partner to work with.”

Carpenter Homer Lopez has worked on many SEU jobs over the years.

“One day I asked Homer what his daughter’s plans were after graduating high school,” said Stephen. “He told me she was interested in going to college, so Kristy and I offered to help him with that process if he ever needed it.”

The following year, Stephen received a call from Homer asking if the offer was still on the table.

“Of course, our answer was yes,” said Stephen. “His daughter, Sandra, was considering several options, but St. Edwards was her number one choice. Kristy and I met with her various times to fill out college applications and financial aid paperwork and meet with her college guidance counselor.”

Sandra was accepted to SEU where she completed her first year as a first-generation college student, and is now a sophomore. Homer enjoys driving through campus with Sandra, pointing out all the buildings he has helped construct over the years.

“Doing as much work as we have over the years at St. Edwards University really speaks to the culture of H&W,” Stephen reflects. “Lots of our folks have worked on those projects over the years, helping to make each project a success and strengthen our relationship with SEU.”

And that’s what it’s all about. It doesn’t get better than working with people we care about and constructing things we believe in. And perhaps the most special part is that the work we do today becomes part of someone’s story tomorrow- just as Homer unknowingly spent years building the spaces his daughter now learns and grows in.
