McCoy’s Retreat is an 11,500 sf training facility located adjacent to McCoy Corporation’s headquarters. Its purpose is to support the company’s long-standing tradition of relational leadership training, which has been a part of their culture for years.
“We’ve dreamed about a project like this for a long time,” said McCoy’s President and CEO, Meagan McCoy Jones. “The Retreat allows our team members from across the company to come to their headquarters to have time to regroup, train, and connect with the entire McCoy’s team.”
The building includes a 9,300 sf crawl space dedicated to MEP equipment and features a variety of thoughtfully-designed spaces such as a screened porch and a library filled with books collected by the McCoy family over time. Visitors will check in through the East breezeway before making their way through these areas, leading them to a large group room for training and presentations. Another large breezeway separates the large group room and the dining hall, which is equipped with a small private commercial kitchen. The West wing consists of group rooms and coaching rooms, providing spaces for more focused, small-scale training sessions. A central courtyard provides a nice overlook toward a grove of live oak trees.
Architecturally, the building combines a blend of structural and architectural concrete, featuring board-formed finishes at areas like the concrete banco seat walls and fireplaces, as well as structural and architectural steel elements. Wood components pay homage to McCoy’s legacy as a lumber supplier. High-end finishes throughout include custom-colored burnished stucco, stone walls, one-of-a-kind wood louvered windows, custom-colored brick tile in the restrooms, and custom-building sealant colors, among others.
“The process is the product,” said McCoy Jones, “which means that if we’re building a place for our teams to connect more deeply, the process of building it should also create deep and trusting relationships, which it did. The process of building The Retreat is a testament to the purpose of The Retreat – bringing people together for something bigger than ourselves.”
A unique element of this job was the number of women involved.
“Hill & Wilkinson promotes inclusivity,” said Andersson Wise Architects Marketing and Business Development Manager, Robin Logan.
“They really put an emphasis on culture, camaraderie, and allowing women a space to feel comfortable.”
Together, McCoy’s Retreat stands as a lasting expression of the company’s values—where intentional design, shared process, and inclusive leadership converge to cultivate growth, connection, and enduring impact.
