From Internship to Career: The Beginning of a Hill & Wilkinson Journey

Each summer, we welcome college interns from across the country to roles in field management and corporate services. They gain hands-on experience, learn industry best practices, and build lasting professional relationships. Whether their future is with us or elsewhere, we aim for their time here to provide knowledge and insight that lays a strong foundation for their career journey.

Many of our current employees began their journey at H&W as an intern.

“They offered me a lot of responsibility, even as an intern,” reflected intern turned estimator, Brett Heidelberg. “They mentored and coached me every day.”

More than a summer job, the H&W internship program is designed to provide a well-rounded introduction to the construction industry. In addition to gaining experience on active projects, interns participate in leadership sessions, professional development workshops, jobsite tours, lunch & learns, and networking opportunities that connect them with team members across the company.

Throughout the summer, interns work alongside experienced professionals who provide guidance, mentorship, and hands-on learning opportunities. From volunteer projects and team-building activities to end-of-summer presentations, the program encourages interns to develop both professionally and personally while building relationships that often extend far beyond their internship experience.

“The people you work with every single day;” shared former intern, current project engineer, Campbell Robinson, “that’s what really matters. And that stood out to me immediately.”

We believe internships are a powerful way to gain real-world insight and clarity when exploring future career paths. Our goal is for every intern to build meaningful connections with our team, creating relationships that last no matter where their journey leads.

“The future opportunities here are endless,” said president and former intern, Matt Shem. “All you need to do is show up, work hard, ask great questions, and the road to success here is yours.”
